Joyce was born in Toledo, Ohio, and moved to Detroit, Michigan at an early age. Growing up surrounded by family, she developed a deep love for family gatherings and celebrations that stayed with her throughout her life.
She graduated from Redford High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Michigan in 1961. While at Michigan, she became an active member of the Alpha Gamma Del-ta sorority and remained involved as an alumna for the rest of her life. During this time, Joyce met and mar-ried Jack Landin.
Joyce raised her children in Temperance, Michigan, where she quickly became a dedicated and energetic
member of her community. She served on the Bedford Township School Board and taught high school histo-ry. She was also actively involved with the Library Board and was elected and served as a member of the Township Board of Trustees. She was never one to sit on the sidelines—she loved rolling up her sleeves and making a difference.
In marriage to George Hagen, Joyce found her perfect partner in adventure. Together they traveled, sailed, and created countless memories at their beloved vacation home in Door County, Wisconsin—a special place that became dear to the entire family. In retirement, they moved to Florida, where they enjoyed warm sun-shine, good friends, and a relaxed pace of life.
Later in life, Joyce moved back to Lambertville, MI for several years and then eventually moved to Farming-ton Hills, Michigan to be closer to family. True to form, she once again immersed herself in her community. Joyce loved volunteering at the Costick Center and helping with all the events that they hosted. She quickly became involved at the Governor Warner Mansion and the Farmington/Farmington Hills Optimist Club, where she made many new friends, while keeping close ties with her Bedford family and friends.
Joyce shared a beautiful, loving relationship with Lyn Hoeg. The two became constant companions and even-tually moved into a lovely home together in Farmington. They traveled, visited family, and brought joy to one another every day. Lyn became a cherished member of the family.
Joyce will be remembered as a lifetime U of M fan, volunteer, hostess and party planner, educator, life-long learner, and a person who was constantly caring for others. Most importantly, she will always be loved and remembered as a loving mother, grandma, baba, sister, aunt, cousin and beloved family member and friend to all who knew her.
