June 13, 1949 — September 9, 2025

Clarkston

Richard “Rick” Sterling Nicholson, age 76, of Clarkston, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born June 13, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Sterling and Kathleen (Chatterson) Nicholson. Rick spent his early years in Florida before the family moved back to Michigan in his early teens. He graduated from Ferndale High School and went on to attend R.E.T.S. Electronics Training School, beginning a lifelong journey of working with technology and machinery.

Rick was especially proud of his time serving as a volunteer firefighter with Independence Township, a role that reflected his strong sense of duty and care for his community. He also worked for Montgomery Ward then the State of Michigan, at Clinton Valley Hospital & Walter Ruther, where he worked with dedication and integrity for over 30 years until his retirement.

Rick met his future wife, Terry, at a Halloween party - a chance encounter through Terry’s best friend - that marked the beginning of a beautiful love story. They were married in the fall of 1969 and built a life full of laughter, adventure, and unwavering love. Their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Stephanie, who brought them endless joy and pride.

Rick loved to spend time on his property, where he walked the land daily, maintained the yard, and often tinkered with his tractors. He loved being outside and staying busy, his happiest moments came during quiet evenings with Terry, building their miniature car collection together and keeping a watchful eye out for new fire truck collectable's. After retirement, the two took a few month long trips to Florida and out west where they went off the beaten path and explored, creating memories they forever cherished. They also enjoyed their trips down to Columbus, Ohio to spend time with their daughter.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Terry Nicholson; his loving daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Nicholson-Gregg; his devoted sister, Mary Ann (Philip) Krier; Diane Nicholson (his brother Sterling’s widow); and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling R. and Kathleen Nicholson, and his brother, Sterling C. Nicholson.

Rick will be remembered for his quiet strength, his devotion to his family, amazing sense of humor and the deep pride he took in everything he did. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
