Obituary of Robert Schueler


Grosse Pointe Park resident Robert Schueler died Monday, March 8, 2010 after a long illness.

Mr. Schueler was born in Detroit, on February 22, 1924 to Arthur and Helen Smith Schueler. Following graduation from Eastern High School in 1941 he attended Detroit Institute of Technology for two years on a scholarship. In 1943 he enlisted in the army and served in both Germany and the Philippines until March, 1946.

Following an honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Schueler completed his education at the University of Detroit Engineering School. He was elected to the Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma engineering fraternities prior to graduating in June, 1949 with a BME degree.

Mr. Schueler began his career with American Metal Products and held positions of tool designer, cost estimator and head of cost estimating. When American Metal Products was purchased by Lear Siegler he joined the sales department as an Account Manager. He worked at Lear until his retirement in December, 1988 after 39 years of service. Immediately after retirement, Mr. Schueler joined Magna International as an Account Manager for the Integram Division of Atoma until March, 1996.

Mr. Schueler was a long time member of both the Lochmoor Club and Grosse Pointe Senior Mens Club. He was a summer resident of Harsen's Island for 86 years where he designed and built a cottage on the Schueler family property for his wife and children to enjoy with him.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Ruth Ann Sheaffer, son Robert Jr., daughter Susan (Richard) Neumann, son William (Sharon), brothers James and Harry Schueler, sister Helen Cameron, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Arthur and sister Dorothy Chope.

A memorial service will be held at a future date. Interment will be private at his beloved Harsen's Island.
