Sara Elizabeth "Betty" Barnes
Passed away unexpectedly at the age of 88 on Monday January 29, 2018 while traveling from her home in Detroit. She was born in Reading, PA on December 3, 1929, to the late Jesse and Grace Wigenton Barnes and she was the third of five sisters and ten children born to that union.She graduated from Reading High School in 1947 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Harlem School of Nursing in New York City in 1955.After becoming a Registered Nurse, Betty moved to Detroit, Michigan where she was employed by Henry Ford Hospital for nearly 25 years until her retirement in 1992, where she had a long and distinguished career.She is survived by a sister, Anna Barnes Rice of Tampa Bay FL brothers Allen R. Barnes and Colin Kelly Barnes of Atlanta, GA., Curtis E. Barnes of Virginia Beach, VA., Malcolm L. Barnes of Sarasota, FL. and 25 nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by sisters Agnes Perry of Detroit, MI, Rita Moore of Austin, TX and Jessie Page of Dallas, TX, and brothers Carl Barnes of Reading PA, Jesse Barnes, Jr., and Alphonso "Billy" Barnes both of Detroit MI.Bettys relatives and friends will miss her wit and humor, and as the Elder of the family her stories of her childhood memories were invaluable in compiling the family geology.Betty left an unforgettable impression on all whom she met, was a gourmet cook and fabulous seamstress, and was a Mother figure and more than just an Aunt for all of her younger siblings as well as many nieces and nephews and lived an exuberant life with the boundless generosity of a selfless personality that always prioritized taking care of others.
A memorial service is being planned by the family in Tampa Bay FL within the next three week period. There will not be a memorial service in Detroit MI
