Obituary of Vaughn Hoogasian

Age 94, March 9, 1924 - August 21, 2018. Beloved husband of Lorene (Leadingham), who predeceased him, and dear father of Rebecca Sue Kapolka, Martin Thomas (Lori) Hoogasian, and Cynthia Lynn Hoogasian (David Adamo). Vaughn passed away peacefully in his home, adjacent to Martins, in Pontiac, Mich. His last day had been a happy one, full of laughter and love. Born to Hripsima and Kazar in Delray, Mich., Vaughn was a first-generation Armenian American who dedicated his life to his family, friends and the education of Michigan students. He valued education highly, learned English as a second language and attained his Doctorate in Education (EdD) from Wayne State University. He spent his career teaching English and Journalism at Detroits McKenzie and Mumford High Schools, Ferris State College and Oakland Community College, from which he retired. Vaughn touched the lives of thousands of students, and long after retirement, frequently encountered students who remembered him. He served as faculty advisor for many national award-winning high school and college yearbooks and student newspapers. He had a life-long love of reading and spent many happy hours immersed in books, until his eyesight failed him late in life. Vaughn was known for his quick wit, even temper and good advice. For the last several years, Martin and Lori were his daily companions and caregivers. Vaughn enjoyed special times with their children, Zoe June and Jackson Vaughn, watching them grow up next door. We are all grateful for Vaughns long, healthy life, his love and his wisdom. Also mourning him are Rebecca and her children John Matthew (Trisha), and Christopher Thomas; and his great-grandchildren Abigail and Jacob Kapolka; Cindy and David; and many nieces and nephews from his and Lorenes extended families. He will be missed by special friends and former neighbors Reggie and Donna Hingley and Laura and Leo Kowalyk. Vaughn also was predeceased by sisters Susie Hoogasian Villa and Vasganoush; son-in-law John Kapolka; cousins John, George and Michael Geragosian; and many friends. In accordance with Vaughns wishes, no services will be conducted. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones choice, or to the Armenian Eyecare Project.
